...that you see a firefighter with 28 years of experience retire...a man unique and spontaneous unto himself...a man that was quoted as saying "he did things his way...", but today is one of those days...a rarity that I was fortunate enough to witness...
...the work that firefighters do is a mystery to many of those outside of our family...individuals who are part of a greater cause...who give and give and give...because it comes naturally to us...it is a blessing and a gift to be part of such a fraternity...
...today...in Henrico, Virginia one of the greats retired..."no need to leave your boots behind Jimmy...no one could fill them if they tried" said Danny B.
...today...Jimmy Mac retired...and as his last call went out...we stood in silence...listening...as each station responded...today was the end of an era...proof of the difference one soul can make...
...tomorrow...life will go on...life around the fire station may be a bit quieter...but when the call goes out...we will answer...as our brothers and sisters in this unique family have done for generations...you see...once you are a member of the fire service...you don't ever retire...you only move on...
...tomorrow we will continue with our traditions...we will continue to evolve as an organization and a family...passing on what we have learned to those who will carry on the traditions that make this line of work more than a job...but a way of life...passing on what Jimmy taught us...living by the golden rule...and making a difference...one difference at a time...
